The Catawba Indian Nation has sued the state of South Carolina to prevent law enforcement from seizing gambling machines at a temporary casino it plans to open on its reservation. The tribe believes a 1993 settlement gave it the right to offer gaming, and it’s hoping to build a permanent casino and two hotels in the future. Another proposed Indian casino in Hardeeville has the support of several students.

A U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear the case of Glendale, Arizona versus the Tohono O’odham Nation, which wants to build a casino on land it owns in the city. The Gila River Indian Community, partnering with Glendale in the suit, said it will take the case to the Supreme Court if necessary.

Both the governor (Rick Snyder, l.) and attorney general of Michigan have notified the Sault Ste. Marie Chippewa Indian tribe that they will not support the tribe’s proposed $245 million, off-reservation casino in Lansing. In a letter, they said if the tribe continues to pursue the casino three blocks from the state Capitol, it does so “at its own risk.”

The Ho-Chunk Nation and city and county officials in Beloit, Wisconsin are nearing approval of an intergovernmental agreement for a proposed casino in that city. The $150-$200 million project would create more than 1,000 permanent jobs.
