A group known as Embo has decided to compete with Sun International for the sole casino license of Nelson Mandela Bay. The license is currently held by Sun, which operates the Boardwalk Casino & Entertainment World (l.), situated on the waterfront at Port Elizabeth. The casino has 800 slots and 21 tables. The license comes up for renewal next year.

The joining of UNITE, a union of textile and apparel workers, and HERE, the hospitality industry’s dominant union, including powerful locals in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, in 2004 seemed to be a match made in heaven, blending together two disparate groups and building a huge influence pool in Washington. The leaders of the two unions, Bruce Raynor (UNITE) and John Wilhelm (HERE), shown at left, are highly respected in the halls of Congress and give the combined organization quite a clout.
