Casinos would be located in hotel complexes
Brazilian Senator Blairo Maggi’s bill to legalize casino gaming in the South American country would allow up to 35 gaming halls in the country, and up to three in some states, with license terms of 30 years, according to SBC News.
Senate President Renan Calheiros recently presented the legislation, known as the “Brazil Agenda,” to lawmakers. Maggi has proposed casinos as a way to boost the economy, fill government coffers and stoke investment, industry and tourism. The bill is under consideration by the Special Committee of National Development.
According to the bill, casinos could only be located in hotel complexes that also have meeting and event space, shopping, and dining establishments.
The bill also includes bingo, and states that cities can have one bingo hall for every 250,000 residents, and each venue can have as many as 50 electronic bingo machines.
The country’s Chamber of Deputies is also studying gaming, which is said to be a controversial issue in Brazil. In September, a special committee was created to hammer out regulatory issues.
