85,000 Credit Cards Hacked at Michigan Casino

An investigation into a data-security incident at FireKeepers Casino Hotel in Battle Creek, Michigan revealed about 85,000 credit and debit cards were hacked between September and April. The incident was discovered April 16. Stolen information could include the card number, cardholder's name, verification code and/or expiration date.

About 85,000 credit and debit cards were compromised between September and April at FireKeepers Casino Hotel in Battle Creek, Michigan, an investigation recently indicated. After the data-security incident was discovered on April 16, casino operators immediately hired independent IT forensic experts to research what could have happened. FireKeepers officers also have been working with law enforcement. Employees also were affected.

The investigation has revealed hacked information may include card number, cardholder name, verification code and/or the card’s expiration date. Additionally, hackers may have accessed Social Security and drivers license numbers. The cards were used for food, beverage and retail purchases. Cards used for hotel reservations and ATM transactions were not affected. FireKeepers officials said there is no evidence that personal information was misused.

Meanwhile, the casino has secured its systems and upgraded online security. Free credit monitoring and identity protection are being offered to customers for one year.
