A Good Year for New York’s Lottery

The New York Lottery posted a record $9.97 billion in sales for the latest fiscal year, a 3 percent increase over the previous 12 months. For education programs statewide, it’s meant a $3.37 billion windfall. Retailers took home another $1.39 billion in commissions.

A Good Year for New York’s Lottery

The New York Lottery is holding its own in one of the most crowded statewide gaming markets in the country.

Revenues from ticket sales and video lottery terminals were up 3 percent for the 2017-18 fiscal year to a record $9.97 billion, a year-on-year gain of nearly $300 million.

The lottery’s contribution to state education programs, equal to around one-third of sales, totaled $3.37 billion.

The state’s 17,500 licensed retailers took in nearly $1.39 billion in commissions, an increase of nearly $43 million over the 2016-17 fiscal year.

Instant games, popular known as “scratch-offs,” continued to prove the most popular of the lottery’s offerings, totaling $4.2 billion in sales.

Popular multi-state jackpot games Powerball and Mega Millions generated $408 million and $312 million in sales, respectively.
