ACMA Gives Warning to Software Company for Aiding Illegal Sites

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), the country’s media regulator, has issued a formal warning to Proxous Advanced Solutions Ltd. for providing software to numerous illicit online gaming websites. This is the first such warning the ACMA has issued.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the company sub-licensed software products from Realtime Gaming, which were then used by at least 13 illegal online casinos. As such, Proxous is considered to be in violation of the country’s Interactive Gambling Act of 2001.

The sites that were found to be using Proxous-licensed software include Aussie Play, Uptown Pokies, Red Dog Casino and at least 10 others. The ACMA has said that all of those sites have already been deemed to be illegal in previous proceedings.

In a statement, the agency said that this is “the first time the ACMA has taken action against a company for its involvement in an illegal gambling operation through supplying software.”

It added: “Since the ACMA started enforcing new illegal offshore gambling rules in 2017, more than 170 of these services have pulled out of the Australian market. Consumers should be aware that even if an online gambling service looks legitimate, it is unlikely to have important customer protections required of licensed services.”
