Adelson-Connected Newspaper Manager Gone

A controversial manager of the parent company of the Las Vegas Review-Journal no longer is that company’s manager and no longer manages the Las Vegas Review Journal. The move comes after Michael Edward Schroeder created a furor over an article some suggest he wrote that used false and plagiarized material critical of a Clark County judge.

Michael Edward Schroeder no longer is manager of the Las Vegas Review Journal daily newspaper or of parent company News + Media Capital Group.

Schroeder either voluntarily resigned or was asked to after generating national attention regarding an article printed in a Connecticut newspaper and critical of a judge’s handling of a wrongful termination suit against billionaire Sheldon Adelson and Las Vegas Sands.

Adelson, via News + Media, quietly paid $140 million to buy the Las Vegas Review Journal on December 10, but did not admit he was the buyer for two weeks afterward.

Meanwhile, many believe Schroeder authored an article critical of Clark County District Court Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez, whom Adelson and his attorneys contend does not have jurisdiction over hiring and firing decisions affecting Las Vegas Sands’ Macau operations. Gonzalez is presiding over a wrongful termination suit filed by the former Sands Macau President Steve Jacobs.

Prior to Adelson buying the Review Journal, the New Britain Herald in Connecticut on November 30 ran an article critical of Gonzalez’ handling of the wrongful termination suit in Las Vegas.

The story was attributed to a writer named Edward Clarkin, and contained fictional quotes and plagiarized material. The Review Journal says it could find no record of the reporter’s existence anywhere but that one article, but says Schroeder’s middle name is Edward and his mother’s maiden name is Clarkin.

Schroeder since has left the News + Media for unstated reasons and at an unreported date.
