Alabama Electronic Bingo May Resume

Electronic bingo could return to Alabama beyond Poarch Band tribal casinos under legislation being drafted by state Rep. Pebblin Warren. Her bill would allow the games at Victoryland Casino (l.), once Macon County's primary employer and tax revenue source. It has been open only sporadically since it was raided in 2010 under Governor Bob Riley.

Alabama state Rep. Pebblin Warren announced she plans to sponsor in the upcoming legislative session a measure allowing Victoryland casino in Macon County to offer electronic bingo machines, like those at the Poarch Band of Creek Indians’ Wind Creek Casinos. Victoryland only has been open sporadically, and offered scaled-down versions of the games, since Governor Bob Riley ordered it raided and shut down. “Macon County passed a constitutional amendment in 2003 allowing the electronic games. We did it for seven years and then the state closed us down. We don’t want to do anything new. We just want the right to do what’s already being done in this state,” Warren said.

Her bill also would possibly allow electronic bingo at Center Stage Alabama, formerly Country Crossing, which also was raided, and perhaps other gambling venues. Country Crossing and Victoryland, at one point Macon County’s largest employer and prime source of tax revenue, are barely surviving, Warren said. “We’re just broke,” she stated.
