Alabama Lawmakers Discuss Joining Powerball

A measure that would allow Alabama to join multistate lottery games like Powerball and Mega-Millions recently was discussed by the state Senate Tourism and Marketing Committee. Bill sponsor state Senator Trip Pittman said joining multistate games would minimize costs yet generate income. Alabama is one of six states without a lottery.

The Alabama Senate Tourism and Marketing Committee recently debated a bill sponsored by state Senator Trip Pittman that would allow Alabama to join multistate lottery games like Mega-Millions and Powerball. The committee could vote on the bill sometime next week.

Alabama, Mississippi, Utah, Nevada, Hawaii and Alaska do not have state lotteries. Pittman said limiting gambling to multistate lottery games would minimize the state’s overhead cost yet still bring in money for the general fund. Other lottery bills still are pending in committee while lawmakers try to work out the details.

If legislators approve the bill, a statewide referendum would allow voters to determine if they want the lottery games offered in the state.
