Executives of Allwyn Entertainment, soon to take over as operator of Great Britain’s National Lottery, have confirmed they are in discussions to acquire operations of Camelot UK Lotteries, the company Allwyn beat out to capture the National Lottery contract Camelot had held for 28 years.
A weekend report by Sky News cited sources close to the talks in reporting Allwyn was considering a takeover of Camelot UK from current owner Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP) for £100 million (US$116 million).
A joint statement from Allwyn and Camelot confirmed the report.
“In response to speculation, we can confirm that Allwyn is engaged in advanced discussions with OTPP which may lead to it purchasing Camelot’s U.K. operations.” the statement said. “If an agreement were to be reached, it would be subject to regulatory approvals.
“Our shared objective is to reach an agreement which would best serve the interests of the many stakeholders of the National Lottery, in particular the good causes it supports as well as the employees of Camelot and Allwyn UK.”
Allwyn Entertainment was formally awarded the contract to operate Britain’s National Lottery as of February 2024, replacing Camelot, which filed a legal challenge to the award of the contract.
