Another Vegas Poker Room Bites the Dust

As the poker boom is some 10 years behind us, what was once seen as a steady source of revenue has become a liability for many rooms. Thus was the case of the Westgate, who become the latest casino to shutter its poker room.

Since September 2012, we are now up to 13 poker rooms closing after the announcement of the Westgate closing operations in its three-table room. The poker room was right near what is arguably the most famous sports book in the world.

The closure came just one week after Paragon Gaming took over the property. As poker revenue continues to decline across the board, it is becoming harder for operators of small poker rooms to justify keeping them open. May broke a 12-month streak of rooms declining in revenue throughout Nevada, but overall, the numbers have steadily declined.

This also marks the second poker room closure of the year, following the closure of the Linq poker room in January. Paragon Gaming previously operated the Riviera, taking over in June 2013. One of the first moves Paragon made at the property was to shut down the six-table poker room, just days after the company began operations.

The manager of that same Riviera poker room at the time of closing was the same manager who managed the Westgate at the time of its closing.
