Although there are no outward signs of progress, the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts says it is still working on plans for a Class II casino in the town of Aquinnah.
Last year the tribe won its right to conduct bingo-style gaming when the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal of a lower court ruling. It is partnering with the Chickasaw Nation through its subsidiary Global Gaming Solutions. That tribe pioneered Class II gaming in Oklahoma.
No details have been released although Chairman Cheryl Andrews-Maltais wrote to local officials “The tribe understands your concern and interest in our gaming project and looks forward to meeting with you once we have more fully developed our plans and have more certainty around the details of the project.”
The tribe is limited to Class II gaming because it doesn’t have a Class III tribal gaming compact with the state and the state has so far refused to negotiate one.
