Argentina’s Chamber of Deputies has begun discussing proposals to curb addictive gambling, including bans on online gambling ads, CDC Gaming Reports wrote May 19.
The lower house of the National Congress has given the Commission for the Prevention of Addictions and Control of Drug Trafficking the job of reviewing proposals and making recommendations.
The wide-ranging ban on gambling ads was proposed by Deputy Maximiliano Ferraro, who calls problem gambling an “epidemic,” and who declared, “Compulsive gambling is being a global problem, greater access through online games is affecting the lives of thousands of young people and families. In our country, the economic situation aggravates the situation. For this reason, we consider it essential to legislate on this issue.”
The draft legislation would allow players to fund their accounts only with cash or debit cards, along with spending limits for online gaming and biometric data registries to lock out minors from playing.
Another Deputy, Mónica Frade, declared, “It is an issue that is breaking families and adolescents. It is a problem that silently corrodes families. We are going to hold joint meetings with other commissions to move forward quickly with this.”
