Argosy Leaves Sioux City

The Argosy riverboat, home of the Belle of Sioux City casino, departed Sioux City, Iowa last week for a trip down the Missouri River. It's destined for an Illinois shipyard, where the vintage riverboat will be salvaged or sold.

The former Argosy riverboat casino recently left its dock in Sioux City, Iowa. After about a week cruising down the Missouri River, it will arrive at a shipyard in Illinois. There it will be salvaged or sold.

The floating casino closed in July following the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission’s order to stop operations. The IRGC said the casino was operating without a non-profit group, as required by state gaming law, so it was forced to close.

Several former Argosy employees stood on the river bank and watched the boat leave Sioux City. Sindy Varnardore, a 13-year casino employee, said, “It’s sad to see it go. It’s been our second home.”
