Arizona Lottery Yanks Machine: Duplicate Numbers

When a lottery number-selecting machine produces duplicate numbers that sets off figurative if not literal alarm bells. It has happened for the second time in two months with the Arizona Lottery.

Once again, the Arizona Lottery has pulled a number-selecting machine after it was discovered it had generated duplicate numbers several times, this time for an in-state game. This is the second such incident in two months.

The Lottery says it still plans to honor winning tickets and to give refunds or exchanges for winning tickets for the period between November 15–21. During that period, the numbers 8-0-4 were chosen three times.

Until new machines arrive, the Lottery will switch to the Multi-State Lottery Association’s machines for its in-state games. The new machines were ordered four months ago.

The difference between the machines is that the ones taken out of service used random number generators, while the replacement machines use rubber balls.

The Lottery plans an investigation and will release the results to the public.
