Arizona Tribes Have a Place in Super Bowl Festivities

It's one big party around Phoenix the week before the Super Bowl. The Governor. The Mayor. Arizona Cardinal Legends. And a celebration of the 22 tribal communities, a point not lost by community leader Gila River Indian Community Governor Stephen Roe Lewis (l.).

Arizona Tribes Have a Place in Super Bowl Festivities

Arizona goes front and center the week of the Super Bowl. The welcoming event February 6 featured Arizona Cardinals legend Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals’ owner Michael Bidwill, Governor Katie Hobbs, and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.

Then there is Gila River Indian Community Governor Stephen Roe Lewis, a member of the host committee. He’s also a member of one of the state’s 22 tribal communities.

“I think were at an incredible moment, where I think it’s unprecedented. You had the NFL give a land acknowledgment and allowed tribal leaders to be a part of this celebration,” Lewis told Fox 10. “I’m proud of the 21 other tribes. We’ve collectively have been working for so long to be heard, to be recognized, to be respectfully shown contributions of our history and to this great state of Arizona.”
