Gambling age raised from 18 to 21

The Armenian government has signed off on several amendments to its national gaming laws. The new framework—which follows an increase in the legal gambling age from 18 to 21—includes restrictions on advertising and limits on lotteries.

Under the new rules, advertising must be targeted at people aged 21 or older and TV and radio ads may be broadcast only between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Operators that violate those rules face a fine of 1 million drams (US$2,100).

The law on lotteries limits gambling to the areas of Tsakhkadzor, a popular year-round ski destination; Sevan, also a tourist destination; the resort town of Jermuk; and the historic city of Meghri, according to Armenian news agency ARKA. Penalties for operators who serve underage gamblers amount to $4200 for the first violation, then $10000 and $20000 for second and third breaches.
