Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE) CEO Ray Pineault commented May 14 that the Ellinikon casino his company is building at Hellinikon near Athens, Greece, will be completed in about 36 months.

He was speaking at the 6th Delphi Economic Forum, which was hosted by the president of Greece Katerina Sakellaropoulou. The casino is being built at the 1,500-acre site of the former Athens International Airport.

“Right now, we anticipate that upon conclusion of the contractual negotiation process, permitting and design will take approximately 12 to 18 months,” Pineault said. “The project will be inaugurated in 2025-26.”

He expects the new resort complex to create about 7,000 jobs and generate millions in tax revenue.

In 2020, MGE and Greek construction company GEK Terna won the tender to build and operate the casino resort for 30 years. The $9.68 billion Ellinikon redevelopment project, which includes the casino, is being designed by the Greek developer Lamda to suggest Greece’s architectural history. It will include retail shopping, hotels, high end dining and residential.

The complex will include a 1,700-room hotel, a conference center and a sports and cultural center with a 10,500-person capacity.
