Several Kroger stores in metro Atlanta recently have begun offering “coin-operated amusement machines” which benefit the HOPE Scholarship program, according to WSB Radio.
The slot-like machines pay out in gift cards, not cash. The machines are not taxed or regulated, and state Rep. Debra Bazemore wants them gone. “We want them totally removed out of the store,” Bazemore told WSB.
Bazemore said she met with Kroger executives after her constituents expressed concerns about the machines in the Kroger on Old National Highway. “I am for giving our children more money to be educated but you have to do it in a proper way,” she said.
State Rep. Marvin Lim said he sent a letter to Kroger about the machines in his district. “Kroger wishes to prey on diverse and/or under-resourced communities,” he said.
Kroger officials responded with a statement that said, “Kroger has been granted licensing to operate Coin Operated Amusement Machines at several stores in Georgia, which will provide additional funds to Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship and pre-k program. Kroger aims to offer a safe, well-lit, convenient and inviting place for shoppers to engage with COAMs, providing a best-in-class experience for Georgia residents.”
About 23 Kroger stores statewide offer the machines, officials said.
