Atlantic City Casino Revenue Stays Flat for June

Atlantic City’s eight casinos saw revenue decline a little over 1 percent in June, but casino revenue for the first six months of 2016 was up 2.5 percent. The Trump Taj Mahal was one of only two properties to see a revenue increase for the month, but workers there went on strike July 1.

Atlantic City casinos saw a 1.2 percent decline in casino revenue for June compared to June 2015, but casino revenue overall was up 2.5 percent for the first six months of 2016.

According to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, the eight casinos collectively won $216.5 million in June. Through the first six months of the year, the city’s casinos had won $1.25 billion, a 2.5 percent increase over the first six months of 2015.

According to an analysis by the Associated Press, only the Trump Taj Mahal and Resorts casinos saw increases in June. The Taj Mahal revenue for June was up 13.2 percent for the month, but for the first six months of 2016, the casino’s revenue is down 3.6 percent from 2015.

However, about 1,000 workers at the casino went on strike July 1. The strike does not include casino dealers and the property remains open.

Resorts revenue was about $15 million, a 9.8 percent increase over 2015. The casino’s 9.5 percent increase over the first six months of the year is the highest of any of the eight casinos.

“It is encouraging to see that casino revenue is up 2.5 percent for the first half of the year even though the industry had a weak June,” said Matthew Levinson, chairman of the Casino Control Commission in a press release on the revenue figures. “Internet revenue continued to surge last month … but it wasn’t enough to offset declines at the tables and slot machines in Atlantic City. There is so much to see and do in Atlantic City, but we need to do a better job letting people know about everything the city has to offer.”

Online gambling was up more than 40 percent over June 2015 to $16.4 million. Table game revenue was down 3.3 percent at the eight casinos, to $54.5 million. Slot machine winnings were $142.9 million, down 3.7 percent.

Bally’s reported revenue of $16.9 million for June, down 3.1 percent, Borgata reported $59.8 million last month. Casino operations generated $56 million while online gambling brought in $3.8 million.

Revenue at Caesars dropped 10.6 percent to $25.2 million. Revenue at Harrah’s was $27.8 million, down 12.7 percent. Caesars Interactive NJ—the casino company’s online arm—reported a total of $3 million, up 15.4 percent year-on-year.

Golden Nugget reported a 2.2 percent drop in its June revenue to $19.2 million. Proceeds from casino operations were $15.7 million. Internet gambling generated a total of $3.5 million.

Tropicana posted overall revenue of $27 million, down 0.7%. Land-based operations contributed $23.6 million. Internet gambling revenue totaled $3.3 million.
