Auckland, New Zealand Snapped Shut Again

New Zealand’s SkyCity Entertainment Group last week closed its flagship resort in Auckland after four new cases of coronavirus were reported in the country. According to Inside Asian Gaming, only 24 hours earlier the government had celebrated 100 days without a single new locally transmitted case of the virus.

Auckland was put back on Stage 3 restrictions for three days as a precaution, with the rest of New Zealand on Stage 2. Bars and other businesses closed, gatherings were limited to 10 people and travel in and out of Auckland was mostly prohibited.

SkyCity Auckland cooled its heels, but the company’s casinos in Hamilton and Queenstown remained open with social distancing measures in place.

“SkyCity is fully complying with this latest update from the New Zealand government,” said CEO Graeme Stephens. “SkyCity is well prepared to respond quickly to these changes and is in a strong financial position to withstand the financial impacts of these temporary restrictions.”
