Australia Bans Gambling Ads During Daytime Online Sports Broadcasts

Australia’s ban on gambling ads during daytime live online sports broadcasts went into effect last month. Gambling advertisements will no longer be allowed for live sports streamed online from between 5am and 8:30pm.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority released new rules for online content service providers last month which expand the ban on gambling promotions during televised and radio broadcasts of live sports to online broadcasts.

Gambling advertisements will no longer be allowed for live sports streamed online from between 5am and 8:30pm.

“This brings online services in line with television and radio broadcasting services,” said ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin in a press release. “It creates a safe zone for children and families to watch live sport across a variety of platforms.”

The rules also limit gambling promotions in the time period to a certain number of times per day, depending on the sports.

The new rules take effect September 28. After 12 months, the regulator will review the rules’ effectiveness.
