Australia to Continue In-play Betting Ban

Australia’s move to ban in-play betting will continue throughout 2016. A move to reform the country’s betting regulations will have to wait for a new Parliament to be seated sometime in 2017.

A ban on in-play online sports betting in Australia won’t be lifted until after federal elections seat a new Parliament.

A date for federal elections has not been set, but they must take place no later than January 2017.

Legislative reforms are scheduled to be considered to the country’s 2001 Interactive Gambling Act. Australia is expected to enact regulations to prohibit offshore gambling sites from targeting Australian gamblers, but the bill cannot progress until parliament resumes after the election.

MPs will likely be asked to consider updated the online gaming legislation to including consumer protection and whether in-play betting on sports should be legalized.
