Back to Square One in Germany

In 2012, Germany issued 20 licenses for online sports betting providers. The licensing process has since been called into question, and an administrative court is calling for a do-over.

Alleged violations of EU laws

Germany’s licensed online gaming providers may lose their licensure due to concerns about the country’s approval process.

According to an administrative court, the licensure process, which has been used to approve 20 applicants since 2012, reportedly violates European Union statutes and laws. The licensees were announced by the Hesse Ministry last year, but were appealed by unsuccessful applicants, according to iGamingBusiness.com.

The Administrative Court of Wiesbaden says the process must start all over again. A higher court must second that ruling, but it looks like the 20 licenses may be overturned pending the appeal.

Operators who plan to challenge the ruling include BetVictor, bet365, Tipico and Lottomatica.
