Belgium Considers New Gambling Ad Restrictions

Belgian officials say they are considering new restrictions on gambling advertisements airing on TV. The initiative is being brought Belgium’s Minister of Justice, Koen Geens (l.), and is drawing the support of the country’s Gaming Commission and several politicians.

Belgium is considering new restrictions on advertising for gambling services including banning ads during live sporting events and daytime viewing hours.

Koen Geens, Belgium’s minister of justice, proposed the review, which has been supported by the country’s gaming commission.

According to reports, restrictions being considered include a complete ban on televised gaming advertisements during the broadcast of live sporting events, as well as during daytime and early evening hours, until 8 pm. The proposal also bans ads that promote excessive or habitual gaming behaviors, though those behaviors haven’t been defined. It also includes requiring problem gambling warnings.

The bill does not address advertising banners at live sports venues.
