Belgium to Tighten Gambling Ad Code

Belgium’s government plans to implement a stricter national gambling advertising code including a ban on gambling ads during live sports broadcasts. The code would also limit the number of advertisements allowed for individual companies and add consumer protections for fighting and raising awareness of problem gambling.

Belgium’s Parliamentary Chamber of Representatives has reportedly approved a stricter gambling advertising code that bans gambling ads during live sports broadcasts.

The code, put forward by Christian Democrat CDV MP Koen Geens, is in response to concerns about underage gambling. It offers a “five-point mandate” to limit industry advertising. They include the ban on betting/gambling advertising during sports broadcasts plus an 8 pm cutoff for gambling advertisements on television.

The code would also limit the number of advertisements allowed for individual operators and include new consumer provisions related to addressing and raising awareness of problem gambling.

The code has the support of the Belgium Gaming Commission which has said the country needs a higher standard of policy for its regulated market stakeholders.
