Belgium Toughens Ad Controls

The government of Belgium has OK’d CDV Minister Koen Geens’ “gambling protection mandate,” giving the Belgium Gaming Commission the authority to enact stricter gambling ad controls.

A plan by Christian Democrat Minister Koen Geens of Belgium gives the Belgium Gaming Commission more power to limit advertising by licensed gaming operators.

As of June 1, advertising by online casino services and gambling products was no longer permitted for broadcast across Belgian TV networks, reported SBC News. Until the cutoff, Belgium sportsbook operators were limited to advertising after 8 p.m.

The government has also demanded that licensed operators register all players through its “itsme customer verification app,” and has moved to cap arcade and café machine game prizes. In addition, all retail premises that sell gambling services, including national lottery tickets, are now required to integrate e-ID readers into their operations to verify age checks.

Despite the new restrictions, the CDV Party says the measures aren’t enough to protect consumers and that it will “push the government to back an outright ban on all forms of gambling advertising,” SBC reported.
