Bermuda’s First Casino Could Open in 2021

Bermuda could open its first casino early in 2021 according to the Caribbean nation’s prime minister, David Burt.

The casino will be the first of four planned resorts that will include gaming. The first casino will be contained within the St. Regis Bermuda Resort at St. Catherine’s Beach in St. George’s. The developer, Hotelco, has promised that the resort will “become the most luxurious development on the island.”

The Bermuda parliament approved the Bermuda Casino Bill in 2016, but Burt says the “island’s banks” are the cause of the delay.

Burt told the Royal Gazette, “I am expecting certainly that we’ll have a casino, at least one casino, operating in Bermuda this year and we’ll continue to work on that. But it has not been easy. If it would have been easy, we would not be sitting here in 2021, about seven years after the former Government passed the Casino Gaming Act, without a casino in the country.”

Hotelco General Manager Laura Purroy commented, “The progress made at the St Regis Bermuda Resort development has been significant and the continued support of the East End community and Government has proved to be equally significant. We are excited about the opening and reopening of both hotels in April 2021.”
