Betfair Blocks Players from India

Betfair has stopped accepting players from India and advised players in the country to close their accounts before the end of January. No reason was given by the company for the exit, but the move comes after Betfair was recently identified by the All India Gaming Federation as excepting bets from the country illegally.

Betfair has stopped accepting players from India sending an email to Indian users to close their accounts by January 28.

Betfair did not give a reason for the move, but it comes after Betfair was recently identified by the All India Gaming Federation as excepting bets from the country illegally.

Currently, the Betfair.com website when accessed from India does not allow bets to be placed and gives the following message on its homepage: “Our Software detects that you may be accessing the Betfair website from a country that Betfair does not accept bets from. If you believe that this detection has occurred in error, please contact us for further assistance.”

In November, the All India Gaming Federation sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi charging that several offshore betting websites, including Betfair, are illegally accepting players and deposits from India in contravention of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, Prevention of Money Laundering Act and other laws according to a report at Asia Gaming Brief.
