A leading Kenyan gaming firm is suing to stop the country’s Treasury Department from raising taxes on the gaming industry by 50 percent.

According to the Kenya News Agency, betting firm Bradley Limited, which runs the Pambazuka National Lottery, has filed suit at Milimani Court hoping to quash the decision by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich. His proposed tax hike went to the National Assembly in March.

The company says Rotich’s tax plan is biased and the proposed tax rate onerous; the current rate is 7.5 percent. According to court papers filed by lawyer Muturi Mwangi, Rotich “acted without jurisdiction and was not authorized” to increase tax rates for the betting, lottery and gaming industry.
