Big Changes Upstream For Rivers Casino

Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh has proposed a plan to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board which would see the addition of a $50 million hotel to the property. Meanwhile, workers inside are demanding better working conditions.

Although Rush Street Gaming has a big 5 casino in New York popping up next year, the company is looking to invest million towards a 250-room hotel at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh. The plans were presented to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board during a three-hour hearing.

The hotel would provide 1,400 construction jobs and 105 jobs. Within five years, it is projected to produce $29.2 million in new casino tax revenues. Workers at the casino have currently taken to the streets in protest, where they hope to form a union with the hope of being given better health benefits.

Employees have also cited poor working conditions caused by smoke as a major concern. Casino employee Donna Spruill said “We need to stop perpetuating the myth that the casino is one of the best places to work in the city.” Since the start of the employees unionizing, better conditions have been seen, including sick days and vacation days.
