Biloxi Sues State For Casino Rent

The city of Biloxi used to receive rent money from the Golden Nugget Casino Resort (l.) in East Biloxi. However, the legislature mistakenly transferred the money into the state general fund and has yet to return it. So the city recently filed a lawsuit to get back its $606,350.52.

The city of Biloxi recently filed a lawsuit in Harrison County Chancery Court to retrieve 6,350.52 in rent from the Golden Nugget Casino Resort. Venue management has paid the rent into a state holding fund but state lawmakers have yet returned it over to the city.

The city, the state and the Institutions for Higher Learning each own part of the land of the Golden Nugget casino resort in East Biloxi. The lawsuit contends under a 2002 contract, the secretary of state gave a portion of the rent to the city and IHL under a 2002 contract. But in 2016, the state legislature mistakenly transferred the city’s money into the state general fund. Three separate bills contained provisions to restore the lease payments to Biloxi but all three died in the legislative session.

Biloxi Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich said, “We’re confident that the right thing will be done but we also must make sure our claim to this money remains active.”
