Blackout at Paris

A basement electric line was accidentally cut at Paris Las Vegas, plunging the Strip resort into near total darkness for 20 hours before power was restored. Nearly 3,000 guests had to be evacuated.

A power outage at Paris Las Vegas forced the evacuation of around 3,000 guests after a basement electric line was accidentally cut.

The 2,900-room Strip resort was in near total darkness for almost 20 hours on November 3 before power was restored around daybreak the following morning.

No injuries were reported, but Clark County Fire Chief Greg Cassell said 11 people were rescued from elevators, and a few people suffered from anxiety-related issues. No one was hospitalized.

The outage was attributed to a worker who cut into the power main during authorized and scheduled work in a sub-basement. Hotel and county officials said there was no indication of sabotage or foul play. Caesars Entertainment declined to identify the contractor.

Richard Broome, a spokesman for the company, said hotel fees were waived and free stays would be provided for guests who were prevented from returning to their rooms in the 33-story hotel and also to arrivals who had to find another place to stay.

Broome said estimates of the loss due to the outage weren’t immediately known.

The last Strip blackout on a similar scale occurred at the Bellagio on Easter Sunday and lasted three days. Business losses were estimated in the millions of dollars.
