Boat with Smuggler, Chinese Gamblers Capsizes

A speedboat allegedly smuggling Mainland Chinese gamblers into Macau capsized off the coast near the Grand Coloane Resort last month. Up to 19 people were aboard the boat, including the alleged smuggler, who was apprehended by police as he tried to swim to shore.

A boat containing Mainland Chinese hoping to sneak into Macau capsized off the coast of the resort city February 26, sending up to 19 passengers overboard, including the smuggler.

According to the South China Morning Post, two women and four men were captured, including one of three alleged smugglers, who was caught as he tried to swim to Zhuhai. Another five people were believed to have swum ashore.

“Our investigations have found they came from Zhuhai to sightsee and gamble,” said Leong Wa Kan of Macau Customs.

According to ABC News, each person on board the vessel was required to pay RMB3,000 (less than US$500) to be smuggled.
