Sweden’s Online Gaming Industry Association (BOS) says it supports the increase in fees to generate more revenue for Spelinspektionen, which is the country’s gaming regulator.
Gambling Insider reported that the government had previously planned to increase the regulator’s budget by (£185,000/€210,000/$239,000). The regulator says—and BOS says it agrees—that additional funds should cover its costs for licensing and supervision. BOS added that the gambling regulator needed to be “sufficiently funded” to carry out its duties. It said in a statement that as currently funded Spelinspektionen is unable to provide the same level of service as in other countries.
Specifically, Hoffstedt said this prevents the regulator from maintaining a “functioning dialogue” with individual license holders. He added, “BOS would like to stress that we believe it is of great importance that the Gambling Inspectorate is sufficiently funded to live up to its overall commitment. It is of greater importance than keeping the license fees paid by our members as low as possible.”
The regulator has also proposed eliminating renewal fees and the fee for amending licenses.
