Boyd Gaming Sees New Jersey Online Gambling Bright Spot

Boyd Gaming saw profits and revenue decline in its second quarter, but its problems are not in Atlantic City where its Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa continue to grow and online gambling is stabilizing.

The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City grew revenue 5.2 percent to 1.9 million, which included .7 million from its online gaming operations in the second quarter. And that’s a major bright spot for Boyd Gaming, which saw its net revenue fall 2.2 percent for the quarter.

Borgata also significantly increased its cash flow, due in part to an $11.8 million property tax settlement with Atlantic City.

Numbers were also encouraging for Boyd’s online gambling prospects in New Jersey, despite a net loss.

Boyd Gaming operates its New Jersey online sites in partnership with Bwin.party. Through June, Borgata had 28.2 percent of the state’s total online gaming revenue.

Borgata officials said 75 percent of its online gamblers in the state are new to Borgata and the company hopes to attract them to its land-based operations through promotions.

Though Borgata’s online gaming business lost $1.8 million in the second quarter, the casino broke even in July and officials expect to continue that trend. The company has attributed the early losses to start-up costs.
