Brazilian Senate Returns to Casino Debate

The Brazilian Senate will debate whether or not to legalize casinos in the nation, after Minister of Tourism, Gilson Machado advocated it before the Regional Development Commission as a way to boost the return of tourism as the pandemic recedes.

The matter has been put on the Senate’s agenda.

During the commission hearing, Orlando de Souza, director of the Forum of Hotel Operators in Brazil, commented that the country needs to discuss ways to help the tourist industry recover: “This includes the resumption of casinos as a way to guarantee the recovery of the tourism sector in Brazil. There is a pent-up demand for leisure offers and casinos would have a big impact on that demand.” He added, “Casinos are inducers to increase the offer of leisure options.”
