Brazilian State Wants to Revive State Lottery

A bill has been filed in the Legislative Assembly of Mato Grosso do Sul, a midwestern state in Brazil, to revive the state lottery.

The Lottery of Mato Grosso do Sul was ruled to be unconstitutional in 2008. However last year Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court ruled that individual states have the jurisdiction to regulate lotteries.

The text of the bill authorizes the state government to revive the lottery. The government has determined that lotteries are an important source of income. The bill would also repeal old laws governing the lottery, which will be placed under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of State for Finance.

Money raised will be used for social security, financing of housing, sports, education and social development.
