The city of Surrey in British Columbia turned down an offer to host a small casino.

The British Columbia Lottery Corporation suggested building a small casino with slots and table games in Surrey, but city officials said they don’t want it.

They say their current Elements Casino and the Frazer Downs Racetrack offer ample gaming opportunities and only would be interested in developing a larger, more destination-oriented casino that would bring money into the community.

Meanwhile, in Peterborough, Ontario, the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation continues facing a legal challenge to its proposed casino there.

The Ontario Municipal Board on September 13 is scheduled to hear a challenge to local zoning changes designed to enable the casino construction.

The September hearing is only a precursor to a potentially larger one later this year and allows three different parties in the matter to preliminarily present their arguments before the panel. If the panel chooses, it will conduct a full hearing at a later date.

Great Canadian Gaming wants to build its proposed Shorelines Casino away from Peterborough’s downtown area.

Challengers say it should be located nearer the city’s downtown area to maximize potential economic impact.
