A group of 18 gaming tribes in California have won permission to begin gathering signatures to put a sports betting initiative on the 2020 ballot. They must collect nearly 1 million signatures by June 25 to qualify.
Voters will be asked to approve sports betting only at brick and mortar locations on the reservation and at racetracks. Card clubs are left out.
Tribal casinos would also be able to add true roulette and dice games. Currently they offer forms of roulette and dice that are based on the turn of cards.
The race to collect signatures is happening at the same time that the legislature is considering its own version of sports betting for the November ballot.
