The Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians of Southern California, owners of Harrah’s Resort Southern California, have released a new economic impact study.
The study, which was released first at a public presentation at the Escondido City Council meeting, showed that the tribe had a significant positive impact on Southern California and particularly San Diego County.
In 2018, the tribe generated more than $350 million in total economic output, supporting nearly 3,500 jobs and providing an additional $20 million in tax revenue.
If the trend continues, the study anticipates the tribe contributing an additional $750 million through 2020.
Tribal Chairman Bo Mazzetti declared, “This study confirms we’re providing great value to our people, our local communities and all Californians. Indian gaming provides a solid foundation for mutual value, and we will continue to build on proven success that reflects our core values of vision, unity and perseverance.”
In explaining his tribe’s philosophy of spreading the wealth to deserving charities and organizations, Mazzetti said, “Don’t forget where you come from. Then when you are in a position to help others, do it.” He said he remembered when his tribe was poor, before gaming, and how people would bring Thanksgiving turkeys to his family. Now, he said, his tribe is in a position to give back many organizations that offer healthcare, preserve the region’s resources and assist military veterans.
In 2018, the tribe contributed more than $860,000 to 60 organizations, he said.
The funding for all this is provided by the casino, which is owned by the tribe but operated by Caesars Entertainment Corp.
The study was conducted by Beacon Economics, an independent research and consulting firm.
