Three weeks ago, California’s card room reopened after being under lockdown for three months. Just days before the July 4 weekend, as Covid-19 infections soared in the state, Governor Gavin Newsom ordered the venues to close again, saying that the disease was spreading at “an alarming rate.”
Currently the most populous state has 237,000 confirmed cases. More than half are in Los Angeles County, where five of the largest card rooms in the world are located. That includes the largest, the Commerce Casino.
The closures are for at least three weeks, and possibly longer. Tribal casinos are not affected since they are on soverign land and not under the control of state or local officials.
