California Horse Trainer Seeks Injunction Against Track

Jerry Hollendorfer, a famed thoroughbred horse trainer, has sought a preliminary injunction against Southern California’s Santa Anita racetrack to force it to allow him to start horses for the winter-spring meeting that begins December 26 and runs until June.

The racetrack forced the Hall of Fame trainer to vacate his stables in June after four of his horses had been euthanized as a result of training or racing since the previous December.

Hollendorfer relocated to Los Alamitos and has run his horses at Del Mar and Los Alamitos. However he has not been able to run horses at Golden Gate Fields and Santa Anita, which are both owned by the Stronach Group.

He lost obtaining a temporary restraining order against Santa Anita that would have allowed him to participate in that track’s autumn races. His horses were able to run in the name of his assistant Dan Ward.

His attorney described the new court action as “as a different type of motion,” adding, “Now that he’s been advised orally that he’s not getting stalls and not being able to participate at the meeting, we’re going for the preliminary injunction.”
