California, Tribe, Forced to Mediation Over Compact

Forced into mediation by a federal court, the state of California and the Enterprise Rancheria will see one of two proposed tribal state gamin compacts imposed for a proposed Yuba County casino.

The Enterprise Rancheria and the state of California have failed to negotiate a tribal state gaming compact over the tribe’s proposed Yuba County casino, prompting a federal judge to appoint a mediator.

This followed U.S. District Judge Troy Nunley’s ruling in February that California acted in bad faith when the legislature failed to pass a compact the governor had forwarded to it. The mediator will pick what it considers the best of the two compacts submitted by the tribe and state and report back to the court in July.

The tribe is going forward with a $170 million Class II casino, which does not require a compact. The first phase includes a casino, dining, bars, conference rooms and retail shops that would create 1,000 construction jobs and 700 permanent jobs. Eventually a hotel would be added.
