California Tribe Wants to Move Casino

A tribe based in Northern California, the Tule River Tribe, wants to move the casino it first opened 20 years ago. It has announced plans to move Eagle Mountain Casino about 20 miles to Porterville, and build a hotel and convention center.

The Tule River Tribe of Northern California is again talking about moving Eagle Mountain Casino from its currently location, where it has been for 20 years. This time the tribe wants to move to a location near the Porterville Fairgrounds, and add a 250-room hotel and a 20,000 square foot convention center.

The tribe owns 40 acres in the Porterville Airport Industrial Park, which is 20 miles from its current casino. The location would put the casino much closer to the city and put it near major roads.

The Visalia Times-Delta first reported the discussions after discovering an article about it in the tribe’s newsletter, which is typically only disseminated to tribal members.

Then members of the tribal council told the Tulare County Board of Supervisors last year that they will be proceeding with plans to move to the property, something the tribe first brought up three years ago.

It has applied to the Bureau of Indian Affairs to put the land into trust.

According to Tule River Tribal Chairman Neil Peyron, quoted by Indian Country Today, “We started as trailers, now we have a great facility. I am proud of this facility and I thank those responsible.”
