Call for New Approach on California Online Poker

A California lawmaker who has butted his head against the legislative wall trying to pass online poker says it’s time to try a different approach. Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer (l.) thinks supporters should let the issue cool down for a year.

California Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer, who has for the past several years tried unsuccessfully to get an online poker bill to the Assembly floor, is looking at a difference approach next year. Bills in some form or other have been introduced and died for ten years in a row.

The powerful chairman of the Government Organization Committee told Gambling Insider: When I first started on this in earnest, we were going slow and methodical, and we had some successes. We weren’t trying to rush anyone and we weren’t pitting one side against the other, as best we could.”

Market experts say that California has a huge potential for online poker profitability.

There is no current bill proposed for next year, although there have been reports that PokerStars representatives are lobbying members in the state capitol.

Jones-Sawyer advises against bringing up the instantly controversial online poker bill again since the state is facing several weighty issues, such as a major transportation bill. He said, “I think the ability to work out something next year has a bigger chance if we do some of the come-together healing things right now.”
