Cambodia Casino Bill Stalls

Cambodian officials say a bill to regulate the country’s casino industry, due for approval in late 2015, is now expected to pass the country’s National Assembly in the first quarter of 2016.

Government looks to boost gaming revenues

Legislation that would regulate and tax the Cambodian casino industry is likely to pass the National Assembly in the early months of 2016, according to GGRAsia. The publication, citing a report in the Khmer Times, quoted Ros Phearun of the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The bill was originally expected to be approved before the end of 2015.

Phearun, a deputy director general of the ministry, said the bill would help enforce tax collection from gaming operators. Cambodia collected US$28.8 million in revenues from the country’s casinos through the third quarter of last year, the Times reported.

The newspaper also reported that Minister of Economy and Finance Aun Porn Monitroth wants to increase the government’s share of gaming revenues to more than US$70 million in 2016.
