Canadian Online Casino Shuts Down

The Northern Bear casino was billed as Saskatchewan’s first online casino, but after two years the site is now closing. Though the site never generated revenue, its operators say it was still an important step to protect First Nation people’s constitutional rights.

After two years, the Northern Bear online casino experiment is shutting down.

The company has suspended operations for economic reasons, according to a press release from GEObet Gambling Network saying that the online gambling world is “very competitive” and costs are high.

The site never generated revenue or jobs, but CEO Bernie Shepherd said the site was still an example of what can be accomplished when First Nations people exercise their inherent and constitutional rights.

Shepherd is a former chief of the White Bear First Nation and also played a key role in the establishment of First Nations-run casinos in Saskatchewan.
