Card rooms sue to Stop Cowlitz Sewer in Washington

La Center, Washington, a town with about 3,000 people, recently made a deal with the Cowlitz tribe to build a sewer line to serve a commercial development for the casino the tribe wants to build. La Center’s three card rooms have sued to stop the line from being built.

Three card rooms in La Center, Washington and a couple from the nearby community of Ridgefield have sued in Clark County Superior Court to stop a sewer line from being extended from the city of La Center through unincorporated land to land adjacent to the 0 million casino that the Cowlitz tribe is building.

The suit seeks to discover whether city had a right to provide sewer service to the tribe’s property. The city is not allowed to serve the casino itself because it is outside of its urban boundary line.

In February the tribe agreed to pay $3 million to the city to run a line to the commercial development adjacent to the casino, which is expected to open in 2017.

The plaintiffs charge that the agreement was signed without adequate environmental review.

The card rooms in La Center provide the lion’s share of the taxes paid to the 3,000-person town.
