The Mechoopda Casino opened Thursday, February 15 in Butte County, California, 15 miles from Chico, near Highway 99. It was the culmination of a 25-year process for the 560-member Mechoopda tribe, KRCR reported.
The tribe, which is based in the ancestral village of the Mikćapdo on Little Butte Creek four miles from Chico, has been working on a casino for 25 years, the casino’s general manager, Dana Dubois, said.
It is the beginning of what the tribe hopes to be a “Mega Resort.” What opened on February 15 with a nearly 500-slot, smoke-free casino, bar and restaurant.
She added, “I can’t tell you how proud I am that they chose us to help them get it across the finish line. You know you’re doing this for 25 years and we are fortunate enough to be here and help them achieve their goal.”
Dubois told KRCR, “We have hired heart, not skillset,” adding, “We can train skillset. I can teach you to do the job I can’t teach you to be a nice person. so we hired people that we thought were really good people.”
